About Us

Welcome to The Jiu-Jitsu Fighter Blog. Our home is at Roseberry's Martial Arts Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. We're dedicated to the serious study of Jiu-Jitsu, but rarely without a little humor thrown in.

The Jiu-Jitsu Fighter was born from a simple desire to promote an interest in Jiu-Jitsu through an open sharing of information, and provide educational insight to those already training in Jiu-Jitsu. In addition, the blog was created as a way to communicate with students to pass on information that might otherwise never be shared. It is still that, but has grown into something much larger than we could ever have imagined. With multiple contributors, the blog has a life of its own. True to this goal of open sharing, the blog is an outlet for many writers with varying thoughts and insights. I hope it is a place where many can come to learn and enjoy for years to come.

Although I am a Black Belt under John Roseberry, I am first and foremost a student of Jiu-Jitsu and always will be. As I progress on this journey, I'll do my best to pass on my insights and thoughts on not only what I've learned, but on new aspects I'm learning.

Do you Jiu-Jitsu?

The Sho-Rei-Shobu-Kan Budo Organization was founded on 1 October 1972 by Chief Instructor John Roseberry. By drawing from the principles of his teachers and mentors Kanryo Higashonna, Chojun Miagi, Seikichi Toguchi, Robert Tann, Matsumoto–Sensei and others, Shihan Roseberry organized and developed a system of teaching martial arts (budo) which has become the basis of SHO-REI-SHOBU-KAN.

Benevolence, courage, honor, and a dedication to humankind, the spirit of Bushido, form the guiding principles for this organization. Bushido is the heart of all of the modern budo. Through budo one strives to train to improve the spirit, mind, and body, while following the ways of compassion, mutual assistance, and peace. The members of the Sho-Rei-Shobu-Kan Organization strive to preserve and teach this philosophy. The organization works to foster a feeling of family among its members by stressing the spirit that we all possess.

John Roseberry, chief instructor, has been training since 1955. His dedication comes from training and discovering the answers through practice. In his schools, students often hear that the answer is on the floor, and he lives this maxim. He currently has students who have been with him for over twenty years practicing on a regular basis. Through his reputation and word of mouth, he has built an organization that spans the world with over 28 member dojos. He has never solicited membership--all of the member dojos have either been founded by students who have moved away from the headquarters in Lincoln and felt the need to continue to be trained by Roseberry-Shihan, or have been dojos who have heard of him, seen him work and have requested membership.
